With moves away from oil and gas happening all over the developing world, the search for viable alternatives is well underway. And hydrogen – which does not produce CO2 when burned, is light, and is easily storable – could fit the bill. Working in combination with renewable energy sources, we look at what role hydrogen can play in the energy mix.
It remains to be seen whether the UK’s new Labour government will reinvigorate its hydrogen development, after doubling down on its clean energy commitments.
With the North Sea gradually being repurposed for wind production, in conjunction with onshore solar, the way forward would appear to be an array of multiple non-hydrocarbon sources.
And could renewable fuels, particularly biodiesel, be part of the plan? We look at how oil and gas usage could be slowly reduced over time by the blending of traditional and new fuels, and how the oil and gas industry can adapt.
