i.safe MOBILE GmbH, based in Lauda-Koenigshofen (Germany), was founded in 2011 and is today one of the world's leading and most innovative developers of mobile communication devices such as mobile phones, smartphones, tablet PCs etc. for safe use in hazardous areas and for robust use in industry and outdoors. Engineers and specialists at the German site develop practice-oriented products and individual, customer-specific software solutions based on legal regulations such as ATEX, IECEx. NEC 500 and EAC. The i.safe MOBILE development team incorporates all international standards into product development and is itself an active member of the relevant standardization committees. In order to meet all explosion protection requirements, the products are developed from scratch. i.safe MOBILE not only develops devices ready for series production for industrial use, but also manufactures specially adapted mobile devices for specific requirements in close cooperation with its customers - from the hardware side to individually tailored software solutions, including a maintenance plan.

i.safe MOBILE devices are suitable for a variety of industrial and outdoor requirements and meet the most important industry standards (ATEX, IECEx, IP6x etc.) with regard to secondary explosion protection. Mobile devices from i.safe MOBILE effectively avoid ignition sources in order to be able to be used safely in areas in which a dangerous explosive atmosphere can occur. This can be caused by arcs, sparks, potential differences, hot surfaces or flames. Furthermore, the electrostatic charging of unearthed components, sliding tuft discharge on non-conductive components and short-wave radiation represent a potential ignition source and explosion hazard for mobile devices.

In addition to the development and manufacture of communication devices for safe use in hazardous areas and customer-specific software solutions, i.safe MOBILE also supports companies as an OEM product developer in the approval, qualification and certification of devices (risk transfer) as well as in production audits and process introductions.

Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things as growth engine for explosion-proof mobile devices

Industry 4.0 leads to increasingly digitized and networked work and production processes. Most of the generated data is also recorded via mobile communication devices and processed further across companies. The necessity and importance of explosion protection regulations has also grown with the ongoing progress in industrialisation. Explosion hazards must be considered not only in the chemical and mining industries, but also in many areas of the processing industry. In addition to the well-known classic areas such as the oil, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and food industries as well as municipal utilities, there are other production areas in which increased processing speeds and increased mechanisation lead to increased abrasion of the materials involved and thus to an increased risk potential. When handling substances that can react with oxygen, there is always a risk of explosion if the flammable substance is present in a room volume at a certain partial pressure or as fine-grained dust in the air.

The mobile devices with Android™ operating system, are Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth®-enabled and all equipped with a camera.

Depending on operating conditions and requirements, i.safe MOBILE is able to equip the explosion-proof mobile devices with various additional functions such as additional keys (SOS key, push-to-talk key), a dual microSIM or amplified loudspeakers. The devices can be operated for NFC (Near Field Communication) and the display can also be operated with gloves and wet fingers.

Various accessory options such as belt clips, charging cups, protective covers and multipens round off the i.safe MOBILE product portfolio.
